My grandma has just discharged from hospital..it's the same old problem. Lack of salt and blood but after giving her a drip for 3 days, she's well and active again. Growing old is scary.. your organs start to malfunction once you reach a certain age and your body can't absorb enough nutrients. You then slowly fade away.. This is a natural part of our life and we can't escape from it eventually.
My grandparents have been living with us ever since I was born. They brought me to school, took care of my meals and pampered me. They gave me pocket money to spend and I still remember I got 60 cents everyday to buy food with. My Ah Gong brought me to school on the first day of my schooling.. not my parents but my dear grandfather. He would wait for me at the schoolgate near dismissal time and we would walk home hand in hand together. My Ah Ma will be at home cooking lunch waiting for us to get back home. She would then bathed me and tucked me in bed for my little nap. My parents would be working hard outside while my grandparents helped to take care of the three brats at home.
Now that we have all grown up, my grandparents have grown old too. My Ah Gong has passed away few years ago and my ah Ma is already near 80. She's becoming slightly senile.
We know that my grandma is not always in the right state of mind, hence sometimes we do not really believe all her words. It's funny though sometimes that she's actually correct. Once, she kept insisting that the doctor called and asked her to go for checkup at the hospital. We thought she's not so alert again and chose to disregard her words. In the end, the doctor called my dad and asked angrily why my grandma was not here yet. We were confused by her.. dunno when she's saying the right things. Most of the time, we just listened to her, nodded and smiled. After that, we verified with one another to get the correct details.
Sometimes I feel that old people are just like young children who want your attention. They are thrilled when you visited and talked to them. We just have to devote a little time to them and they feel happier because of your concern. My grandma's behaviour makes me laugh too..
For instance, when the doctor at the hospital asked for her name and age, she could answer all. When he asked her whether she knew where she was now, my grandma's answer was 'I am here la'. Her answer was that a few times and everyone including the doctor laughed.
Last night, she suddenly woke up and told me to take her upstairs back to our house... she kept saying she's at our block corridor and wanted to go home. I had no choice but to say..' we have climbed up the stairs and is her room already. Now go back to sleep.. be good.' Hearing that, she dozed off happily.
A little patience and kind words can help to make an elderly feel happier.
